Yet Another Update

I am on the roll with updates! Version 1.3.2 of Chess for Android uses a larger font for the move list and highlights the last moved played by the engine (controlled by the already existing "show valid moves" button).

I am thinking about a version 2.0 with a completely new board layout to use the limited screen space more effectively. As usual, keep an eye on this blog if you are interested.

Hey don't forget about save on exit! I seldom get a chance to play a whole game before life interupts!

Thanks for the updates.

I hope to implement this soon (just studied the Android API on how to do this).

Hi,
I'm currently working on a academic research project at a Portuguese university. This project involves an agent playing chess in a mobile device (with Android). Since you have this chess application available on Android's Market for free I was wondering if you would also be willing to provide the source code, so I can use it on this project.

Hi Pedro,
I have no direct plans to make the Android applications open source. Please keep in mind that my game applications are relatively simple projects. If you want to research chess programming at a competitive level, many other much stronger chess engine are available in the public domain (although none directly for Android as far as I know). You may want to port one of the stronger engines instead of starting with my engine (derived from BikJump). Hopefully this helps.

The focus of my project is not the chess components, it is more on the agent and his "social skills". So I do not need something strong chess engines or complex interfaces, just something fairly simple to use and adapt to Android if needed.

Anyway, thank you for your time :)

how is the self-play mode invoked ?

By pressing "reverse side" repeatedly (you can use shortcut '@' on the keyboard for this), the engine will play against itself. Especially at the random level this can yield hilarious games. There is no mode to play the game completely automatic, if that's what you are asking?

Thanks for the tip. A completely autonomous play is what I am looking for.

I can add an autoplay to the next release of Chess for Android.

Bruno,
I added save-on-exit to all my three Android games.

That is very good news about the save-on-exit. I'm very excited. I am often able to only make a couple of moves before I'm interupted.
