Android Game Manuals

It is long overdue, but I finally wrote brief manuals for Chess, Checkers, and Reversi for Android that explain the full menu structure of the games. I plan to add more explanation here over time. Please let me know if you have suggestions.

Thank you very much for Chess for Android; It's very nice! One request: can you make the board auto rotate during free play? It's kind of a pain to manually do it every time when playing against another person.

Hi Kirk,
To castle, when allowed, simply move the king two squares to the left or right. You can see an example screen-shot in: http://aartbik.blogspot.com/2009/11/en-passant-and-castling.html

Love Chess for Android; my favorite chess app. One feature request, could you allow the user to choose a file name and the number of games one is allowed to save- instead of limiting saved games to 8. Maybe unlimited if the user has the game on their SD card. Thank you for such a great UI and chess app! This only feature missing.

Hello Aart, happy new year, and thanks for Android Chess! Great good-looking visual interface which even looks better than Arena.

I didn't play chess for years and your tiny app brought me back. After some weeks of training I'm finally able to beat it at Level 1 :)

One wish: It would be great if levels could be selected by a fixed calculation depth (half-moves). It seems that my mobile sometimes does a lot of background jobs, and then the chess engine is getting really weak.

I'm enjoying reversi. I'd love to know what the v, d and n numbers are on the right hand side. I assume they relate to the engine, but I couldn't find any mention of them in the manual.

Thanks Andrew. The v denotes the evaluation value from the engine's perspective (with positive values when engine thinks it is ahead, and negative values when it thinks it is behind), the d denotes the depth of the search tree, and n denotes the number of nodes (positions) examined.

Connecting Chess for Android to a Remote Server

I have received several questions on how to connect Chess for Android running on an Android device (e.g. a phone) as client to a remote chess server (e.g. a powerful desktop), so I decided to write a small document with detailed instructions. What you will need: The server software from Bernhard Wallner's chess utilities , suited for your server's operating system (if, say, your desktop runs Windows, you will need to download the Windows version). You do not need to download the client software in this case. The network enabled version of Chess for Android . On the server, start the engine server software, and construct a new row for every engine you want to run remotely. Assign a name, port number, and select the full path to each engine binary (an executable that runs on the server). You can also supply command line options for starting the engine. Connecting with the DGT Board

After all the fun I had connecting Chess for Android with the Millennium  over Bluetooth, I was curious if I could provide similar support for the DGT electronic chess boards. Some of these have Bluetooth capabilities, most use USB connections, and some older models, like the one I have, still use the RS-232 connector. To my pleasant surprise, by combining the original serial cable of DGT with a USB-to-serial cable and a female-USB-to-USB-C cable, I was able to get an actually working connection between my DGT board and my tablet or phone. Next was implementing support in Chess for Android. Luckily, DGT kindly shared the protocol documentation with me, and after a fun weekend of hacking, Chess for Android now proudly supports DGT electronic chess boards as well.
